Prostate Health - Dr. Herbert Riemenschneider

Peyronie's Disease is a condition that causes curvature of the penis due to a plaque that forms in the erectile body of the penis. This plaque can cause the penis to curve right, left or even downward. As the amount of plaque increases intercourse can become difficult or impossible. Peyronies disease is most prevalent in men between 50 and 60 years old, although it can occur in almost all adult males.

Men who seek treatment for Peyronie's disease usually begin with oral therapies. Large doses of Vitamin E, medications like Potaba or Verapamil are generally used. Approximately 40% of men are helped by these mediations.

In more severe cases or when there is not a significant response from the medical management for Peyronie's disease, a surgical option does exist. This surgery involves excising the plaque and grafting dermis or biocompatible graft to the area where the plaque has been incised or removed

This type of surgery is very successful, when done by an experienced surgeon. Success is defined as having an erection suitable for intercourse. Although it is not a common procedure for most urologists, Dr. Riemenschneider has more than twenty years of experience with the treatment of Peyronie's disease and Peyronies plaque surgery and many satisfied patients

Beyond the surgical treatment for altering the plaque, oral medication for erectile dysfunction, injection therapy or even penile prosthesis implantation are alternative options.
