Prostate Health - Dr. Herbert Riemenschneider

Erectile dysfunction is sometimes referred to as “impotence”. It is the recurring inability to have an erection, firm enough and long lasting enough, to make vaginal penetration for intercourse. “Impotence” can also describe other problems of the male that can interfere with intercourse, such as lack of orgasm, ejaculation of sexual desire.

However, erectile dysfunction (ED) is specific and relates to the firmness of the penis and the duration of the erection. The incidence of ED is increasing. As new treatments have become available, such as Viagra, Levitra and Cialis, more men have come forward seeking treatment.

When the oral medications are not successful, injection therapy can be used. Mediations can be directly injected into the erectile tissue, using a very fine needle. Or, a vacuum device (a cylinder that generates negative pressure) can be placed over the penis creating an erection as the blood flows into the erectile tissue. Then a gently compressive band is placed around the base of the penis. This works well for some men, but many feel it is too cumbersome or mechanical.

A penile prosthesis is a treatment for erectile dysfunction.

Surgical therapy is considered when the other options are not successful. The most common treatment is to implant a device into the erectile tissue of the penis. This is known as a penile prosthesis. There are two types of penile prosthesis, semi-rigid and inflatable (hydraulic) prosthesis.
